Laid bare: Power plate

What is it? Based on the concept of whole vibration therapy, the power plate is a vibrating platform that removes the need to work out with weights by giving the body muscles a high-speed workout, as the vibrations make them contract and relax up to 50 times a second. In fact, manufacturers claim the vibrating platform offers the same benefits as an hour-long, sweaty gym workout in just 15 or so minutes.
Where? Edinburgh's first dedicated power plate studio, Studio EH1, which offers a free trial to all new users. Prices start at £10. Telephone 0131-229 8605 for details.
How does it work? Instructor-led clients are taken through a series of warm-ups on the vibrating plate before toning work is performed for 60 seconds a time. Squats, tricep dips, bicep work, shoulder work, push-ups, lunges and ab work are all done during the session to get the most out of the workout and ensure clients feel the burn. Afterwards, there's a series of warm-down exercises finished off with a deep tissue massage.
Was it worth it? Yes. Our tester went along three times a week for a month and has seen a change already in her figure. "My body has become more toned and I have muscle definition for the first time ever," she says. "I also feel more alert and the best bit is the reduction of my cellulite. It's by no means an easy workout, but 20 minutes of that flies by. I've been recommending it to everyone as you see the changes so fast."
