Rangers and Hamburg formalise fans friendship into club collaboration
The Scottish Premiership leaders and Bundesliga II side made the long-standing friendship official in a ‘co-operation agreement’ which will see a series of joint initiatives and crossovers between the blue and white clubs of Glasgow and the northern German city.
Plans are already underway and Rangers’ commercial and marketing director James Bisgrove said he was pleased to “formalise a long-term friendship between two of the most passionate and loyal supporter groups in European football”.

Links between fans from the Volksparktadion and Ibrox began in the 1970s but were re-established in the 1990s with Hamburg legend Jord Albertz signing at Ibrox under for Walter Smith birthday and becoming a firm fan favourite. His 50th birthday last month was one of the first initiatives with celebrations shared by both clubs and fan meetings on social media are next on the agenda.
Co-branded merchandise is another route being pursued and Cornelius Göbel, Director of the fan culture department at HSV, explained: “As far back as the 1970s we have had a strong friendship with Glasgow Rangers.
"This foundation will be the basis of our work to press on with shared projects in the future, whilst also strengthening and energising the profound connection between the two clubs.
"We are convinced that with this partnership we will be able to implement the wishes of both sets of supporters in the long term.”
Fan Liaison Officer, Greg Marshall added: “We are looking forward to providing great fan engagement opportunities and strengthening the already strong links that our supporters share.
"This partnership originates in fan culture and we are delighted to be able to move forward and work together knowing that this exciting new partnership will appeal greatly to fans of Rangers and HSV alike.”
Rangers also have a football partnership with Orange County SC in California, USA and another with Indian Super League side Bengaluru FC.
