Opposition form
Austria arrive at Hampden in good form having lost just twice in the past years. They’ve played 16 times in that period and drawn twice – with Norway and Poland, but won the rest including a 6-0 thumping of Latvia and two victories over Northern Ireland.
Who to watch
David Alaba is the main man for Thursday night’s opponents. The fleet-footed Bayern Munich wing-back is an attacking threat and is well supported by a quality cast of team-mates including Hoffenheim’s highly-rated midfielder Christoph Baumgartner.
Previous meetings
Scotland and Austria have met 20 times at senior men’s international level – and Steve Clarke’s side will be seeking a seventh win come kick-off at Hampden, but the recent results have been fairly psoitive – Scotland have lost to Austria just once since 1978.
There have been three friendlies in the past two decades, with the spoils shared – Scotland winning in Vienna, Austria winning at Hampden and a 2-2 draw in Graz.
Perhaps the most memorable recent match between the sides was a 2-0 home win for Scotland at Celtic Park in 1997 – en route to qualifying for France 98 – where Kevin Gallagher scored a double.
