Edinburgh’s Balmoral Hotel opened its doors for the first time.
Designed by Willaim Hamilton Beattie, it was built for the North British Railway Company as a hotel for the adjacent Waverley Station.

Hide AdOriginally known as the North British Hotel, it was renamed The Balmoral after an extensive refurbishment in the late 1980s.
The hotel clock, which can be seen the length of Princes street, is set two minutes fast, to assist passengers reaching their trains. There was previously an elevator which would take residents of the hotel from the lobby down to platform level.
