We'll raise the money to fly our pal James' body home

James Waddell, 18, from Dalry, was just days into a fortnight's holiday on the Greek island of Zante when he was hit by a car after falling from a quad-bike in the early hours of Sunday morning. Fundraising events are being organised after a Facebook page was set up in his memory and more than 1,100 people signed up. The efforts come amid concerns James' basic travel insurance may not cover quad-biking, potentially leaving his family with the bill for repatriating his body. Friends of the family have welcomed the support and say it is still not clear whether or not they will have to foot the bill or how much it might be. James's grieving friends are holding a fundraising event at the Corstorphine Inn tonight from 6:30pm. Pupils at his former school, Forrester High, have also been fundraising in his memory. Corstorphine Inn manager Dominic Royer, 46, said one of James's friends had contacted the pub's duty manager to ask about holding the event there. He said: "The duty manager had just served James in the pub last week, so she was shocked at the news." James – who was described as "happy-go-lucky" and "the real joker of the pack" by his father Glenn, 47 – had worked as a trainee fitter at a vehicle repair centre in Blackhall since leaving school in 2007. Messages from family, friends and holidaymakers in Zante at the time of James's death have been pouring on to the Facebook tribute page. One message, posted by Calum Robertson, said: "RIP Jamesy boy, keep them laughing wherever you may be now." Another read: "You're gonna be missed by everyone . . . amazing how in 18 years you touched so many people's hearts." A bank account has been set up for anyone who would like to make a donation, and a shrine has been created in Zante, with flowers and Scotland flags placed near the spot where James died. Messages posted on the Facebook site state that the money raised will go towards the cost of bringing James's body home. James' friends are fundraising after being told the family may have to pay up to 15,000 before the Greek authorities will release James's body.
