The company arranged for Citylink buses to accept train tickets and Smartcards between Dundee and Aberdeen, and for Stagecoach buses to accept them between Dundee and Montrose.
The nature of the incident is currently unknown but ScotRail tweeted contact information for the charity Samaritans: “If you want to talk to someone about what's happened, or anything else that's on your mind, @samaritans are available around the clock to listen.
“Calls to 116 123 are free and won't appear on your phone bill.”
One Twitter user who was on the train at the time said: “I’m on the train involved and just want to make sure that ScotRail know that the guard has been great, going round making sure all the passengers are okay and keeping us informed.”
The British Transport Police have been contacted for a comment.
