On the same day, another writer, Brian Allan, suggested including the phrase “… breaking away from the United Kingdom”. Any such phrase would be constitutional nonsense, because if Scotland separated from England, the political entity called the United Kingdom would simply cease to exist.

I seem to recall, in years gone by, hearing Alex Salmond frequently telling us he promised to give the people of Scotland the chance to express their wish as to whether to remain with the status quo or to become an independent nation. The operative word was “wish”. This has now been replaced by “agree”.

Hide AdAs the prerequisite for Scotland to become an independent nation is for us to leave the UK, the referendum question should surely be: “Do you wish Scotland to leave the United Kingdom.” Yes or No.
