The Kinghorn RNLI lifeboat and the Kinghorn coastguard team were on the scene by 3.30pm and the lifeboat crew recovered the boy from the water in a “strong swell”, the Marine and Coastguard Agency said.
The lifeboat crew gave emergency medical attention before Eryk was taken to Victoria Hospital in a serious condition.
His family were with him at the time of the incident.
A spokesman for Fife Constabulary said: “This was a tragic accident and we are doing everything we can to support the family at this very difficult time.
“Our thoughts are with them and we are providing as much practical assistance as possible.”
Police said the boy died at around 5pm, about 90 minutes after he fell into the water, in the hospital’s accident and emergency unit.
One Twitter user reacting to the news wrote: “RIP the wee boy that died after the water stole him at Kirkcaldy today. The angels will take care of you.”
Another added: “Thoughts and prayers to family.”
It later emerged that the sea wall was due to undergo a £9 million upgrade to make it safer.
