He reportedly said: "Me and Sean had a bust-up.
"He tried to punch me and came at me with a baseball bat.
"I got the bat off him and he got a smack on the head during the struggle."
He has been released on $3,000 (1,850) police bail and intends to plead not guilty when he appears in court on 19 January.
However, he fears a maximum sentence of 14 years for assault and three years for threatening police because of his previous history.
He said: "There are plenty of people over here who want to see me back in jail for avoiding the death penalty.
"I think they are going to throw everything at me."
He is currently staying in Minnesota with ex-wife, Wendy Amerud, and their son.
He also has two grandchildren, Taliyah, six, and Taiton, three.
