Travel Wishlist - log cabin luxury at Woodcock Lodge, Kilmichael Glen, Lochgilphead, Argyll
The lodge and its neighbours, Wild Cat and a third Canadian style log cabin currently under construction, take luxury self-catering to a new level for couples and parties of two people. Underfloor heating, copper bathtubs, log burners and tactile textiles all add up to an indulgent take on the simple life.
With three miles of salmon fishing which guests can enjoy free of charge, the lodges are shortly to be rebranded as "Braden Lodges", Braden being Gaelic for salmon. Other wildlife to be spotted in the woods and around the estate’s two lochs include owls, deer, pine martens, squirrels, badgers, otters and numerous birds, including buzzards and eagles.

Room Service
Woodcock Lodge makes a feature of the materials from which it is constructed, with exposed wood throughout, softened by fur throws, rugs and cushions on the leather sofa. This gives the kitchen/living room, bedroom and bathroom a cosy air and harmonises the interior with the surrounding woodlands. There is a four poster bed and real flame fire in the bedroom, sofa, HD TV and log burner in the living room and in the bathroom, a copper bath in which to luxuriate.
Wining and Dining
In the kitchen you will find a cooker, grill, microwave, kettle, coffee maker and all the necessary utensils and appliances required to self-cater. If you prefer to eat outside, and the weather allows, there’s an outdoor entertainment space with a BBQ, pizza oven, fire pit and picnic table, as well as a separate, sheltered BBQ hut with a central barbecue and Scandinavian-style wooden seats covered in reindeer skins which can seat up to 12 people.
If you fancy letting someone else do the cooking, or want to stock up, the nearest shops, pubs and restaurants and a ten minute drive away.
Worth Getting Out of Bed For
If you don’t want to go far, it’s a short step to the hot tub with views of the surrounding glen and stars for a relaxing place to wind down and switch off without wifi. For the more energetic, pull on your walking boots and head through the forest to the estate’s two trout lochs a mile from the Lodge. Or check out the Bronze Age and Neolithic monuments around Kilmartin village, including cairns, carvings, cup and ring marks, and standing stones and when it opens again, Kilmartin Museum with its artefacts and insights into 6,000 years of history are not to be missed. The Crinan Canal is a short drive away, for walking, cycling, or just sitting and watching the boats navigate the lock system, and a variety of boat trips to the west coast islands and along the coast are recommended. The nearby village of Tayvallich has a pub and café which are excellent stop offs after walking the Taynish nature trail in search of otters.
Little Extras
If you really have to log on, there is wifi at Kirnan House, which is a short walk or drive from the lodges.
Dogs are welcome at Kirnan Estate.
