SPFL Awards: Ramsdens Cup final

In the Premiership Partick are now the side occupying the dreaded eleventh place, with Hibs missing the chance to move away from trouble in a 2-0 home loss to Aberdeen last night. Falkirk got the result they wanted in the Championship when Hamilton Accies and Dundee finished level, while Morton holding off relegation for the second game in a row. Play-off places are still up for grabs in League One, with Arbroath ironically beginning to look marooned at the foot of the table. Peterhead are almost over the line in the League Two title race and Annan have secured a play-off berth, whereas Queen’s Park look set to finish at the foot of Scottish football for only the second time in their long history. Good week for – Raith Rovers The Kirkcaldy side are the 2014 Ramsdens Cup winners thanks to John Baird’s extra time goal. The game was reminiscent of 1994’s Coca-Cola Cup Final with Raith facing one of the Old Firm, being rated as underdogs, and with the backing of the minority of the crowd. Just like 20 years ago the Stark’s Park club emerged victorious, and there was plenty of dancing in Raith on Sunday! Bad week for – Hearts and Garry O’Connor The demotion to the Championship that has been expected all season finally happened at the weekend despite a 4-2 win at Partick Thistle. The 15 point deduction that was in place before a ball was kicked, combined with a mid-season slump, was just too much for Gary Locke’s side to overcome, and a run in the top flight of Scottish football that has lasted 31 years has come to an end. The lack of financial control over recent years was always going to bring a day of reckoning, although events in Lithuania this week may be more important that Saturday’s relegation. As for O’Connor, his lack of contribution to Morton’s survival fight was highlighted by club Chairman Douglas Rae, and a second stint in Greenock looks very unlikely to happen. Team of the week – Hearts It might have been a bad week in terms of being relegated however Hearts went down with a bit of fight in their ranks. They beat Hibs 2-0, drew 1-1 with Aberdeen after going down to 10 men, and then saw off Partick Thistle 4-2 to make it seven points from nine in the past week. If manager Locke can keep squad together they may have many good weeks in the Championship next season. Manager of the week – Grant Murray (Raith Rovers) Murray led his side to Ramsdens Cup success in only his second season in charge at Raith Rovers. It completes a unique hat-trick for the former Hearts man as he was part of the Tynecastle Youth side that won the BP Youth Cup, and then the Scottish Cup in 1998. Premiership Player of the week – Steven Thomson (St Mirren) The Paisley side were two goals down to Motherwell, and sitting in the relegation play-off spot when skipper Thomson led the recovery. He grabbed a goal before halftime and then just seconds after a controversial penalty equaliser Thomson sent a shot through Gunnar Nielson’s legs for the winner. A big performance in a big result for his side. Premiership Goal of the week – Billy King (Hearts) Youngster King hit two at Firhill in his side’s 4-2 success with his first goal earning this week’s Premiership Goal of the Week award. The Scotland under-19 player had set up a goal for Dale Carrick to make it 1-1 before getting into the act himself with a fiercely-hit 20-yard shot that screamed past Paul Gallacher in the home goal. Championship Player of the week – Rory Loy (Falkirk) The Bairns are back in the Championship title race after a 5-0 demolition of Cowdenbeath with Loy going home with the match-ball. Former Rangers and Carlisle striker Loy netted twice in the opening half an hour and then completed the scoring nine minutes into the second half. His goals have left the Falkirk fans asking Phil Roberts - who was that? Championship Goal of the week – Barrie McKay (Morton) On-loan Rangers player McKay scored a fine second goal as Morton defeated Livingston 2-0 at Cappielow. McKay exchanged passes with Rowan Vine as he darted into the Lions box, before tying Callum Fordyce in knots and sweeping the ball home. League One Player of the week – Keighan Parker (Airdrie) Former Wembley goalscorer Parker’s comeback from playing in the third level of junior football earlier this season has been matched only by Airdrie’s recovery from what looked like relegation back in the autumn. The former St Johnstone and Blackpool player helped see off Dunfermline at the weekend with an inch-perfect free kick that opened the scoring. That strike and his general play make him this week’s League One Player of the Week. League One Goal of the week – Craig Molloy (Brechin City) Not much has been going right for Brechin City recently as a season that was meant to be about promotion has turned into a fight to avoid the relegation play-offs. Molloy did what he could to lift spirits with a thumping goal from 25 yards that put his side two up against Ayr, with the Glebe Park men holding on for a 2-1 success. League Two Player of the week – Josh Todd (Annan Athletic) Former Carlisle youngster Todd ran the show from midfield as Annan booked their play-off place with a 3-0 success over Clyde. Todd not only bossed the midfield, he popped up with two second-half goals to leave Annan eight points behind Peterhead and eight points ahead of the third placed Bully Wee. League Two Goal of the week – Scott Davidson (Annan Athletic) Todd may have supplied a greater quantity of goals however it was Davidson who provided the quality four minutes from the interval. The striker picked the ball up 30 yards from goal and rifled in into the top of the net.
